EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly effective form of psychotherapy designed to help people heal from distressing memories, trauma, and anxiety. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR therapy uses bilateral stimulation—often through guided eye movements, tapping, or sounds—to help the brain process and reframe painful experiences.

I often explain that trauma memories can get “stuck” in the nervous system, causing ongoing symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, or anxiety. EMDR therapy helps the brain reprocess these memories so they no longer feel overwhelming, allowing you to move forward with greater calm and resilience.

Research shows EMDR is effective for:

You’ll be guided to recall a distressing memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation. This process helps your brain “unstick” the memory and re-store it in a healthier, less distressing way. Many clients find that their emotional charge around the memory decreases significantly, making it easier to cope.

IS EMDR THERAPY RIGHT FOR YOU?

If you’ve tried traditional counselling but still feel weighed down by past experiences, EMDR may be a good option. It is an evidence-based approach and can be a powerful tool for healing and creating lasting change. You can be screened by a trained EMDR therapist who can help determine if you meet criteria for successful care using this approach.
