Let’s be honest - we’ve expected our partners to read our minds at some point. I’ve practically earned a gold medal in this unrealistic expectation. Luckily, I have come to accept that telepathy is best left for sci-fi movies about alien invasions attempting to take over planet Earth. For us humans, having solid communication skills can be a very effective superpower. Whether you and your partner are plotting to take over the world or deciding who has to unload the dishwasher this evening - strong communication can make all the difference in coming to a conclusion and keeping your relationship thriving.
When stress or distance builds, it can feel harder to stay connected and even want to communicate. As a psychologist, I often hear couples say they want more closeness but aren’t sure how to get there. The good news is that communicating our relational wants and needs, in an effective way, can be a game changer for relationship satisfaction and fulfillment (in addition to accepting that our partner doesn’t carry the gift of telepathy).
When communication weakens, couples may notice more arguments, less affection, resentment, loss of connection, or feelings of loneliness—even while living together. And what’s worse: feeling lonely in a relationship or feeling lonely alone? That’s up for debate.
If communication often leads to increased conflict or reduced attempts to communicate over time, couples counselling may provide a helpful path to navigating these moments and get the relationship back on track.
Final score:
Communication Skills - 1
Telepathy - 0
